(Washington, D.C.) –  Today, Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) released the following statement on the newly-released tax cut plan unveiled by House Republicans on Thursday.

“I can’t say I’m surprised, but I am disappointed that Republicans are moving forward with their partisan plan to raise taxes on workers and middle class families in Washington state in order to give a massive tax cut to the wealthiest Americans, biggest corporations, President Trump, his family, and the vast majority of his cabinet. I am hopeful that enough Republicans will stand with us and with the middle class to reject this plan, and that we can then get to work on a bipartisan approach to cutting taxes for the middle class and growing the economy from the middle out, not the top down.

“This giveaway to the wealthy will hurt millions of Washington state families, and specifically, the Republican elimination of the sales tax deduction will mean billions of dollars will be lost from the pockets of Washington state workers in order to line the pockets of billionaires and big corporations. Any representative from Washington state who supports this plan will have to explain to their constituents why they are putting party and ideology above our home state and our working families.

“Republicans are going to pay lip service to helping workers and the economy, but the numbers don’t lie. This is another massive tax break for the rich—and nobody should expect those tax breaks to ‘trickle down.’

“If anyone was still under any illusions that Republicans were concerned about the deficit or debt, that should end today. This massive tax cut for the rich would add trillions of dollars to the national debt, allowing Republicans to then come after Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, and other middle class priorities. This is absolutely wrong, and people across the country are going to fight back.

“Just like when Republicans failed in their efforts to jam a partisan Trumpcare bill through Congress, Democrats will be at the table and ready to get to work on true tax reform that puts the middle class first—as soon as Republicans set this partisan, anti-middle class plan aside.”
