(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), highlighted how the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law will repair and upgrade Washington state roads and bridges. The legislation makes the single largest investment in bridge repair since the interstate highway system, and Senator Murray has already announced nearly $900 million in highway funding for Washington state from the law, with more on the way.

“Anyone who drives in Washington state knows how badly we need more reliable roads and bridges,” said Senator Murray. “But now—thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law—our state will see more than five billion dollars to repair and rebuild roads and bridges. Everyone deserves safe roads and a reasonable commute—that’s what the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law will deliver, all while creating jobs in every community. This is a really big deal and it’s good news for Washington state.”

Senator Murray successfully worked to include provisions from the Bridge Investment Act she introduced in May 2021 in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to establish a competitive grant program to assist the repair and replacement of deficient and outdated bridges, and ease the national bridge repair backlog.

Below are some of the key provisions for roads and bridges in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

  • Roads: Based on formula funding alone, Washington state would expect to receive $4.7 billion for federal-aid highway apportioned programs, and be eligible for additional funds as well for repairing and rebuilding roads and highways.
  • Bridges: Based on formula funding alone, Washington state would expect to receive $605 million for bridge replacement and repairs, and be eligible for additional funds as well.
  • Major Projects: $16 billion nationally for major projects that are too large or complex for traditional funding programs but will deliver significant economic benefits to communities.
  • Safety: Washington state can expect to receive approximately $49.4 million over five years in funding to augment their commercial motor vehicle (CMV) safety efforts to reduce CMV crashes through the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program (MCSAP) formula grant.
  • Addressing Infrastructure Redlining: $1 billion nationally to create the first-ever program to reconnect communities divided by transportation infrastructure.
