Veterans: Senator Murray Applauds Announcement of Fisher House in Seattle

(Washington D.C.) – U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) today applauded the selection of Seattle, Washington as the location of a new Fisher House. A Fisher House is a facility that provides free housing for the families of Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) patients. Fisher Houses are built with the support of the Fisher House Foundation.

“I am grateful that the families of our brave veterans will soon have one less worry when their loved ones are being treated here in Seattle,” said Senator Murray “Having a Fisher House here means that families will be able to focus their energy on providing support and care during a critical time. I commend the Fisher House Foundation for their generosity in providing this facility to military families.”

The new Fisher House will be built on the grounds of the VA Medical Center in Seattle. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2007. The Seattle VA medical center is a level two poly-trauma center and has been involved in the care and long-term treatment of many Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans as well as veterans of earlier conflicts.

“The Fisher Foundation deserves tremendous credit for recognizing the need for this facility here in Seattle,” said Murray. “The Seattle VA Medical Center continues to treat service people who are returning from Iraq and Afghanistan with traumatic injuries. The families of these young men and women often have to travel great distances to be with them during their care. Providing a free residence within walking distance is a tremendous gift to veterans and their families who have sacrificed so much for our country.”
