Statement from Sen. Murray on Wolfowitz Letter Regarding Boeing Tankers

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz has called for a “pause in the execution” of the agreement for Boeing to build 100 767 air refueling tankers for the U.S. Air Force.

Sen. Murray released the following statement:

“We have come a long way since the beginning of this process. There have been many bumps along the way. I’m confident that another round of scrutiny will prove that this is still a good deal.

I appreciate Secretary Wolfowitz’s stated support for securing new tankers. And I agree this review must be done expeditiously.

Further delay of the tanker program, beyond the two years that have already elapsed since Congress first approved this plan, could result in greater costs to taxpayers and to our defense capability.

This tanker deal has already faced unprecedented scrutiny, from Congress, government agencies, the Pentagon, and outside interest groups.

I will continue to work to ensure that this deal goes forward for our servicemen and women, our workers, and the American taxpayers.”
