SEQUESTRATION: Murray Applauds Senate Passage of Transparency Bill Pushing for Details on Defense and Non-Defense Cuts

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) applauded the Senate passage of the Sequestration Transparency Act of 2012, which will call on the Office of Management and Budget to detail the impact of sequestration across both defense as well as non-defense spending. The bill has already passed the House and will now be sent to the President for his signature. The Senate had already passed similar language in an amendment introduced by Senators Murray and McCain to the farm bill last month.

“I am very glad that we passed this bill to give Congress and the American people more information on the impact of sequestration across both defense and non-defense spending.

“Everyone should understand that sequestration is a terrible way to cut spending, so I am hopeful that the more information my colleagues receive about its impact, the more they will be willing to move off of their partisan positions and work with us toward a balanced and bipartisan replacement.

“Sequestration is not going to simply disappear because both sides want to avoid it. It is going to have to be replaced with responsible spending cuts and new revenue, and that replacement is going to have to be balanced, bipartisan, and fair for the middle class.”
