Senator Murray’s Statement on Veterans Day

ICYMI: Senator Murray and Veteran Leaders: Build Back Better Will Lower Costs, Create Opportunities for America’s Veterans – MORE HERE

Senator Murray: “While Veterans Day presents an annual opportunity to recognize the sacrifices of our nation’s veterans, it also presents an important reminder that the best way we can honor the sacrifice of our country’s heroes is by working every day to fulfill the promises we’ve made to them as a country.”

(Seattle, WA) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), a senior member of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, released the following statement on Veterans Day.

“Every year on Veterans Day, we take time to honor the courage and commitment of our nation’s heroes who have sacrificed so much to protect our country and defend our freedoms.  And every year on Veterans Day, we renew the promise we as a country make to our veterans—that after their service ends, we’ll take care of them when they come home. As the daughter of a World War II veteran and Purple Heart recipient, I know firsthand how important it is we honor that promise.

“When I talk to veterans across our state, too often I hear about veterans facing problems when they return home. Some struggle to find work and can’t make ends meet. Others find a wall of red tape between them and benefits like health care, including  mental health care, that are supposed to be part of the deal. And I know the pandemic has only made these and other challenges even worse.

“That’s why—as a voice for Washington State’s veterans in the Senate—I’ve been consistently fighting to make sure our country fulfills its promise to our veterans long after their service ends. It’s why I’m working to ensure VA expands fertility treatment and adoption services for veterans and their families through my Veteran Families Health Services Act. It’s why I’m pushing VA to prioritize the long-term care needs of all veterans—including women veterans, veterans of color, LGBTQ+ veterans, and veterans with disabilities. It’s why I’m fighting to pass legislation that will give veterans the tools they need to build real financial security into retirement. And it’s why I am continuing my work to ensure every veteran has access to the affordable housing, quality, affordable child care services, workforce training, and so much more.

“While Veterans Day presents an annual opportunity to recognize the sacrifices of our nation’s veterans, it also presents an important reminder that the best way we can honor the sacrifice of our country’s heroes is by working every day to fulfill the promises we’ve made to them as a country. So to all of our veterans, thank you—and please know I won’t stop fighting for you in the United States Senate.”
