Senator Murray’s Statement on Obama Administration’s Accommodation on Birth Control Coverage

(Washington, D.C.)  – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray released the following statement following an announcement by the Obama administration of a revised accommodation to the birth control benefit in the Affordable Care Act, which will exempt religious employers from having to provide contraceptive coverage if they have religious objections, and instead provides for a third-party insurer to cover the full cost of employees’ contraception coverage.

“This is a fair policy that protects women’s access to contraception from being dictated by their employers. In working to carefully balance religious liberties with the reproductive rights of all women, the Obama administration has proven that they are willing to thoughtfully and carefully implement a policy that will help women access birth control without a co-pay.”
