(Washington D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray issued the following statement as legislation to protect our communities from gun violence is scheduled for consideration in the Senate.
“In Washington state and across our country, we have witnessed too many horrific acts of gun violence to continue doing nothing to protect our communities, so I’m hopeful that we will be allowed to debate and vote on this important issue in the Senate.
“While I fully respect the rights of law-abiding gun owners, there are important, common-sense steps we must take to keep dangerous weapons away from criminals and the mentally ill. Those steps include strengthening background checks, closing loopholes that allow criminals to purchase deadly weapons, and keeping the weapons of war off our streets.
“To do this, we must renew our commitment to explore the root causes of these horrible crimes and come together around an approach that addresses all aspects of gun violence. Inaction is not an option, and I look forward to working with my colleagues to pass sensible legislation that protects our communities.”
