Senator Murray’s Statement on FAA Maintenance Inspections Announcement

(Washington, D.C.) – Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Chairman of the Senate Transportation Appropriations Subcommittee, issued the following statement in regard to the FAA’s announcement of enhanced reviews of airline maintenance records:

“While the FAA is doing the right thing in accelerating its review of airline maintenance practices, this announcement also raises concerns about the FAA’s lax oversight in this area.  American taxpayers employ almost 4,000 FAA safety inspectors across the country whose principal job is to ensure that the airlines follow all safety rules and regulations.  The fact that the FAA now feels the need to double check its work raises a lot of questions that the American people deserve answers to.”

Murray will pursue this and related aviation safety matters at a subcommittee hearing on April 17.
