Senator Murray’s Statement on DOE Reinstating BPA’s Hiring Authorities

(Washington D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray, a senior member of the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, issued the following statement in response to the U.S. Department of Energy reinstating all of the Bonneville Power Administration’s (BPA) delegated human resources authorities following the completion of key actions to correct unlawful hiring practices at BPA as found in the Department’s Inspector General October 2013 report.

“Since the discriminatory hiring practices at BPA were first reported over a year ago, my priorities have been to make sure that all veterans and others who were treated unfairly are made whole and that BPA makes the necessary changes to ensure that this never happens again. As a longtime advocate for servicemembers and veterans, I know well the incredible value that veterans bring to the workplace, and I was extremely disappointed by what had occurred.

“I am pleased with BPA and the Department of Energy for completing the review of all hiring cases in question, which has resulted in the rightful placement of more than 65 veterans.  While significant progress has been made in addressing hiring and personnel practices at BPA, I will continue monitoring the situation closely and will keep working to ensure that BPA is treating veterans fairly and also maintains the flexibility and authority it needs to set policies that support the Pacific Northwest and its ratepayers.”
