Senator Murray Statement on Vancouver Ballot Box Arson

ICYMI: Murray, Peters, Klobuchar, Durbin, and Warner Call on Agencies to Prioritize Election Security in Advance of the 2024 Presidential Election – MORE HERE

Vancouver, WA – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), issued the following statement in response to a ballot drop box being set on fire at the Fisher’s Landing Transit Center in Vancouver, Washington.

“The destruction of ballots in any way, shape, or form runs totally counter to our fundamental values as Americans. Whoever is responsible must be held accountable, and I trust law enforcement to do its job here. We must make sure every citizen is able to participate in our democratic process.

“No voter should be deterred. Your vote is your voice in a democracy. I urge anyone who dropped off a ballot this weekend at the Fisher’s Landing Transit Center to contact the Clark County Elections Office and request a replacement immediately. No one’s voice should be silenced due to arson or political violence anywhere in America.

“Every elected official and leader has a responsibility to condemn any acts of political terror and violence—whether it’s threats against poll workers or the destruction of ballots.”

As Senate Appropriations Chair, Senator Murray continues to ensure that election security is prioritized. In FY 2024, Murray secured $55 million for election security grants for states and U.S. territories—extending funding to protect the integrity of our elections.
