Senator Murray Statement on President Biden’s Proposed Budget  

(Washington, D.C.) – U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), the Chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, released the following statement on President Biden’s proposed FY22 discretionary budget.

“Budgets are about values and priorities at the end of the day—and I’m glad to see the President laying out a framework that shows our country values our students, workers, families and communities most of all and acknowledges the need to not just go back to normal, but build back stronger and fairer from COVID-19.

“As we continue to fight COVID-19 and work to ensure an economic recovery that leaves no one behind, we need to:

• make bold investments to bolster our public health infrastructure and preparedness, respond to longstanding health crises, and support groundbreaking research on diseases that devastate hundreds of thousands of families each year;
• provide for the safety and wellbeing of unaccompanied immigrant children in our nation’s custody and get them quickly and safely placed with families and appropriate sponsors;
• make sure every single student, no matter their race, zip code, disability, socio-economic status, sex, or gender, can get a high-quality, public education;
• protect and expand workers’ rights;
• develop much more affordable housing and take significant steps to increase assistance for renters and people experiencing homelessness;
• continue to support increased funding for our veterans on mental health, suicide prevention, and homelessness programs;
• and take bold steps to confront the climate crisis by making historic investments in clean energy, transit, and environmental justice initiatives that will create good-paying jobs and a healthier world.

“I look forward to working with members of the House and Senate to prioritize workers, families, and communities first in our nation’s budget in the coming weeks and months.”
