Senator Murray Statement on Anniversary of January 6th Insurrection

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) released the following statement on the two-year anniversary of the January 6th insurrection.

“The horrific attack on our nation’s Capitol two years ago was a grave reminder of how fragile our democracy can be and how important it is we do everything possible to defend and strengthen it. People across the country saw their fellow Americans, enflamed by a sitting U.S. President’s bold-faced lies and extreme Republicans, go to dangerous lengths to attempt to thwart the peaceful transition of power and reverse the outcome of a free and fair election. We use our voices and our votes—not violence—to decide elections, and as we mark two years since that terrible day, I remain committed as ever to making sure something like January 6th never comes close to happening again.

“As Members of Congress, we have a responsibility to not just talk about the importance of our democracy—but to take action to protect it. That’s why I fought hard to pass the Electoral Count Reform Act last month to update our laws to make clear that when it comes to certifying the results of our presidential elections, it’s the people’s votes that matter. And it’s why I will continue fighting hard for legislation to protect voting rights so that every eligible American can exercise their right to make themselves heard at the ballot box, without fear or intimidation. As long as I am in the Senate, I will continue using every legislative tool at my disposal to ensure our democracy stays a democracy—and Americans can use their voices, exercise their right to vote, and be confident the results of our free, fair elections will be respected.

“I am grateful as ever for the heroism of our Capitol police officers who bravely fought to protect us that day. Their courage allowed the true will of the people to prevail on that dark day, and my heart is with the families of the officers who lost their lives.”
