(Washington, D.C.) — Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) issued the following statement on the 20th anniversary of the attacks on 9/11.
“Twenty years ago, our nation suffered a devastating attack, costing us thousands of innocent lives, and leaving behind a scar that will forever remain a part of our history. As we pause 20 years later to remember the loved ones we lost on that tragic day, let us also honor the first responders, military service members, and everyday heroes who bravely gave their lives for their fellow Americans—whether they rushed into danger in the minutes after those horrific attacks or provided aid and comfort in the days and weeks that followed.
“It is through their example that we saw the best of what America has to offer—and proved that when faced with adversity, America is always able to rise to the challenge and come out stronger than before. So let’s move forward with the hope that our nation’s future can be better than our past. And may we never forget that our strength is found when we stand together united.”
In 2019, Senator Murray voted to reauthorize the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund for the next 73 years, which provides financial support to help pay the health care bills for first responders and survivors of the attack on 9/11.
