(Washington D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty
Murray (D-WA), a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced
that she included $16,395,000 for the Yakima River Basin Water Enhancement
project in the Fiscal Year 2011 Energy and Water Development Appropriations
Bill. In the Yakima River Basin, water shortages during the cyclical droughts
pose an ongoing challenge. With this funding, the Bureau of Reclamation will be
able to continue a water conservation project with the Sunnyside Valley
Irrigation District.
“Nothing
is more important to Yakima farmers and families than clean water, and this
investment will help the local community conserve this most precious of
resources,” said
Senator Murray. “This investment will also ensure economic opportunities
for the region’s farmers and fisherman who depend on a reliable water supply.”
“Receiving
the additional funding for Sunnyside’s conservation project is great news. This
additional federal funding enables Sunnyside Valley Irrigation District to move
us that much faster in improving our water use efficiency,” said G. Douglas Simpson,
Chairman of the Board of Sunnyside Valley Irrigation District.
Having
passed the Energy and Water Appropriations Subcommittee today, the bill will
now go to the full Appropriations Subcommittee before going to the full Senate
for consideration.
