(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray released the statement below on Chad Wolf, President Trump’s nominee for Department of Homeland Security undersecretary for strategy, policy and plans, following the President’s statements that he intends to elevate Mr. Wolf to Acting Secretary pending confirmation by the Senate. The Senate confirmed Mr. Wolf on a 54 to 41 vote.
“Since day one of his Administration, the President has used the Department of Homeland Security to traumatize and separate immigrant families rather than to keep our country safe. Mr. Wolf’s role in implementing the President’s hateful policies, combined with his glaring lack of national security experience, should make his nomination a complete non-starter.
“Mr. Wolf’s nomination is especially concerning because the President clearly intends to appoint him to lead the Department in an acting capacity, rather than submitting a nominee for the Senate to thoroughly vet and confirm as is our constitutional responsibility. The Department of Homeland Security plays a critical role in our national security infrastructure, and the lack of stable, qualified, and vigorously vetted leadership at the Department has undermined its ability to work strategically and proactively to keep our families and communities safe.
“A vote for Mr. Wolf was, in other words, a vote to prioritize hateful, partisan ideology over our national security and the core values our country aims to uphold. That’s why I strongly opposed Mr. Wolf’s nomination, as I have long been opposed to President Trump’s inhumane efforts to reshape U.S. immigration policy, and urge the President to nominate a candidate for Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security who can be trusted to put our nation’s security ahead of the President’s partisan, reckless immigration agenda.”
