(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), ranking member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies (LHHS), released the following statement on the final Fiscal Year 2019 Labor, HHS, & Education Appropriations Bill that cleared the House-Senate conference committee yesterday, which rejects massive cuts to education proposed by Secretary DeVos.
“The message of this bipartisan agreement couldn’t be any clearer: Democrats and Republicans once again reject Secretary DeVos’ extreme anti-public education agenda and are fighting back against her attempts to undermine our students and public schools.
“When Secretary DeVos highlighted in her confirmation hearing how little she knew, and how opposed she was to public education in America—I was inspired by the number of students, parents, and teachers who stood up and rejected her extreme agenda. Unfortunately, instead of getting the message, Secretary DeVos has done nothing but confirm people’s worst fears—from rolling back student protections, to promoting her extreme privatization agenda, to proposing drastic cuts to K-12 education, civil rights protections, college affordability, and more. This bill makes it clear that, despite Secretary DeVos’ best efforts, public education is a core American value, and I’m going to keep fighting to make sure we live up to that.”
