Senator Murray Helps Pass Federal Spending for Washington State Emergencies

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, helped pass emergency spending legislation that includes help for some of Washington state’s most urgent problems. The legislation passed the Senate by a veto-proof majority of 75-22. 

"Our state has immediate concerns that deserve immediate federal help," said Senator Murray. "Our roads have been battered by storms, our fishermen are struggling, rural communities are being asked to go it alone, and so much more. 

"The legislation passed today, will help to save jobs, repair roads, care for veterans, and aid rural communities right here in Washington state. Unfortunately, the President believes the only emergencies worthy of American tax dollars are overseas. I urge the President to reconsider once again turning his back on our needs here at home."

The legislation passed today will now be considered by the House of Representatives and will likely be combined with funding for the wars in Iraq an Afghanistan and sent to the President. President Bush has threatened to veto any funding for domestic emergencies included with war funding. 

A new G.I. Bill to provide educational assistance benefits for service members who have served on active duty since September 11, 2001, including activated reservists and National Guard was included in the legislation. Senator Murray is a co-sponsor of the new G.I. Bill. 

"The G.I Bill that passed today would renew the promise we make to our veterans. It would once again show that we are working to repay them for the many sacrifices they have made for us," said Senator Murray. "It would also pay dividends for today’s veterans long into the future, just like the World War II-era G.I. Bill did for the greatest generation. The bi-partisan support for this bill, especially from those members of Congress who have benefited from the G.I. Bill, should give pause to President Bush as he considers vetoing it."
