Senator Murray: “We need to explore every legislative option and go as big as we can on immigration with the votes we’ve got”
(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) issued the following statement affirming her longstanding support for comprehensive reform to fix our country’s broken immigration system and establish a fair pathway to citizenship.
“As we enter a new year, I am as committed as ever to fixing our broken immigration system and establishing a pathway to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented immigrants currently living here—including DREAMers, farmworkers, and the many essential, undocumented workers who do so much to keep our country running.
“I’m not convinced that we’ve exhausted our options here—I am firmly committed to continuing conversations with my colleagues to figure out what we can do to make some real progress. Even with a razor-thin majority, Democrats control Congress and the White House—we need to explore every legislative option and go as big as we can on immigration with the votes we’ve got.”
Senator Murray has pushed for humane immigration reform throughout her entire Senate career. This month, Senator Murray sent a letter calling on the Biden administration to grant Temporary Protected Status (TPS) re-designations for El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua, in addition to a new TPS designation for Guatemala. Last year, Senator Murray was one of the first senators to make clear that she would pursue every avenue to achieve a pathway to citizenship for all. Senator Murray is also a cosponsor of the Safe Environment from Countries Under Repression and in Emergency (SECURE) Act, which would establish a path to citizenship for immigrants with Temporary Protected Status (TPS) or Deferred Enforced Departure (DED).
