Senator Murray Applauds Investment in WA Early Childhood Home Visitation Program

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) applauded the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services their $1.8 million award to help at-risk Washington state families receive voluntary home visits from nurses and social workers to improve maternal and child health, child development, school readiness, economic self-sufficiency, and child abuse prevention. As part of the Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting (MIECHV) Program, this grant is funded by a provision Senator Murray worked to include in the Affordable Care Act.

“Research has clearly shown the early years are critical in a child’s development and lay the foundation for success in school and in life,” said Senator Murray. “This funding will help Washington state parents and children thrive right from the start.”

Authorized by the Affordable Care Act, the creation of the MIECHV Program responds to the diverse needs of children and families in communities at risk and provides an unprecedented opportunity for collaboration and partnership at the Federal, State, and local levels to improve health and development outcomes for at-risk children through evidence-based home visiting programs.
