(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, met with President Biden’s Supreme Court nominee, Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, in her Senate office. Following the meeting, Senator Murray announced her strong support for Judge Jackson’s confirmation, emphasizing Jackson’s excellent qualifications and the important perspective she would bring to the highest court in the country.

“Let me just say to everybody, I had the opportunity to meet the most amazing woman—I’m very excited that she’s on her way to the Supreme Court, has to get through a hearing first and the votes,” said Senator Murray. “But I think [Judge Jackson is] one of the most impressive candidates I have ever interviewed and talked to that’s going to be hopefully moving on to the Supreme Court here soon.

“[Judge Jackson is] somebody with experience, somebody with heart, somebody with compassion, somebody that understands the law,” continued Senator Murray. “And I am confident that I can tell my constituents at home in Washington state that if they ever have a case that comes before this judge: they will have somebody who will listen, who will understand and who will make a very smart decision for them, and that’s what matters the most to me.”

Senator Murray has been a strong advocate for the confirmation of highly-qualified judicial nominees who reflect the diversity of communities in Washington state and America, pushing for greater professional diversity on the federal bench in particular. Since the start of this Congress, Senator Murray has secured the lifetime appointments of four highly qualified candidates as federal district court judges in Washington state.

Most recently, Senator Murray secured the confirmations of Tana Lin, Washington state’s first ever Asian American federal judge and a former public defender and civil rights lawyer; Lauren King, a tribal law expert who is serving as Washington state’s first ever Native American federal judge; David Estudillo, the son of Mexican immigrants and a former immigration attorney; and Kit Dimke who is serving in the Eastern District of Washington from the Spokane Courthouse. Senator Murray is currently working to secure the confirmation of 2 more already announced nominees: John Chun, who would be the first Asian American man to serve as a federal judge in Washington state and Tiffany Cartwright, a leading civil rights lawyer.
