(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray announced that Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) facilities in Washington state will receive over $23 million as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The funding will be used on renovation and repairs at veterans facilities throughout the state. As a senior member of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee and the Senate Appropriations Committee, Senator Murray worked to ensure that funding to help upgrade VA facilities was included in the Recovery Act. Senator Murray voted to pass the Recovery Act on February 13th. The bill was signed into law by President Obama on February 17th.
“Any time we can provide for veterans while also creating jobs in this economy, it’s a huge victory,” said Senator Murray. “This funding will help ensure that our state’s veterans are being treated at safe and state-of the-art facilities. It will also help to create and protect construction jobs in all corners of our state. With our state’s unemployment rate and budget deficit growing, this announcement could not come at a better time.”
The funding announced for Washington is part of $1.2 billion included in the Recovery Act for VA hospital and medical facility construction and improvements, long-term care facilities for veterans, and improvements at VA national cemeteries.
The following VA facilities in Washington state will receive funding:
- Vancouver: $625,000
- Seattle: $10,152,000
- Spokane: $6,269,865
- Walla Walla: $3,154,018
- American Lake: $2,732,000
- Tahoma National Cemetery: $135,219
