(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) announced that the Seattle Housing Authority has been awarded a $10 million competitive grant for Rainier Vista Phase III from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. This grant was made available through the American Economic Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
"I recently visited Rainier Vista with Secretary Donovan and showed him the great work the Seattle Housing Authority is doing to create a stable community for Washington state families,” said Senator Murray. “This Recovery Act funding will create jobs and make a critical investment in Seattle’s public housing infrastructure. The grant will help the Seattle Housing Authority continue to invest in affordable housing, and will help struggling families meet their most basic needs.”
Senator Murray joined United State Department of Housing and Urban Development Shaun Donovan in Seattle on a tour of Rainier Vista on August 10, 2009 and discussed with him the role of recovery funds in the project.
Rainier Vista Phase III is one of 15 projects across the country being awarded Public Housing Capital Funds today. These funds are specifically designated for public housing transformation, to help redevelop public housing that is blighted and distressing to the surrounding community. These grants will address the factors creating blighted public housing through renovation of existing housing or demolition and redevelopment of new public housing or a mixture of public housing and non-public housing on the site.
As Chairman of the Senate Housing Appropriations Subcommittee, Murray worked to ensure that job-creating investments in Washington’s local housing agencies were a key component of the Recovery Act. Senator Murray voted to pass the Recovery Act on February 13th. The bill was signed into law by President Obama on February 17th.
