(Washington,
D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) announced that the first
round of rebate checks has been mailed out to Washington state seniors to help
those who have fallen into the Medicare Part D “donut hole” this year afford
prescription drugs. The $250 rebate checks are provided under the new health
care reform law and are being mailed out to seniors on a rolling basis as they
hit the “donut hole.” Last year 76,600 seniors in Washington
state had to pay the full cost of their prescription drugs after falling into
the “donut hole.”
“No senior should
ever have to worry about not being able to afford the prescription drugs they
need to stay healthy,” Senator Murray said. “I worked hard to make sure that
the new health care reform law includes significant improvements to the
Medicare Part D program. And I am very pleased that this first round of checks
is going out to help Washington state seniors buy prescription drugs.”
