PIERCE COUNTY: Senator Murray Secures Support for Job-Creating Defense Projects in Pierce County

(Washington,
D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), a senior member of the Defense
Subcommittee announced that she has included critical funding for Pierce County
companies in the Fiscal Year 2011 Defense Appropriations bill.  The
funding will create jobs and help Washington state remain at the forefront of
technology, research, and innovation.

The key
job-creating bill passed through the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee today,
and will now move to the full Appropriations Committee for consideration.

“This
investment in companies right here in Washington state will help create
family-wage jobs while supporting our national defense,”
said Senator Murray. “This
is about bringing Washington state tax dollars back to companies in our own
backyard. And the plain truth is that if I’m not fighting for these job
investments to be made here in our state, they will go to other states like
Texas and California. Our state’s innovative companies deserve their fair share
of federal funding so they can hire, expand and provide our service members
with tools to keep them safe. I’m proud to have secured this support for local
companies to help them create jobs.”

Pierce
County projects are listed below:

Project Title: National Guard Employment Enhancement Project (NGEEP)

Recipient:       Washington Military Department

Amount:         $1,500,000

Location:        Camp Murray, Washington

To expand the National Guard Yellow Ribbon program by providing employment
assistance such as pre-apprenticeships, short-term training, and certification
and testing fees to Washington National Guard members.

With more than 14 percent of Washington Army National Guard currently
unemployed, it is more important than ever to address gaps in federal, state,
and private sectors employment assistance programs.  By enhancing the
skills sets and employability of National Guard members, this funding would
benefit Washington State employers and the economy as well as Washington State
National Guard members and their families.

Project Title:  Madigan Army Medical Center Trauma Assistance
Program

Recipient:       Tacoma Trauma Trust (TTT)

Amount:         $3,500,000

Location:        Tacoma, WA

This investment would provide military medical personnel at Madigan Army
Medical Center with critical trauma care experience in local hospitals and also
expand trauma treatment for military beneficiaries and civilians in the region.
In addition to lowering the cost and improving the quality of health care for
local residents, this would help deployed military doctors provide the best
possible care to wounded warfighters.
