(Washington,
D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray released the following statement on
the passing of Washington state community leader Roberto Maestas.
“I
was deeply saddened to learn that Roberto Maestas passed away early this
morning. He was a pillar of the Latino community, a leader in our state, and he
will be missed terribly by me and so many others.
“I
have known Roberto for years and I was constantly impressed by his commitment
to his community and his dedication to justice and equality.
“I
talked to Roberto just last week. And even as he knew the end was drawing near,
he continued to care about others so much more than about himself.
“Those
of us who knew Roberto will never forget him. We will never forget the
work he did for the people who needed it most. We will never forget the trail
he blazed for future generations of Latino leaders. And we will never forget
the values that he stood up and fought for every day of his life.
“Roberto’s
legacy outlives him. And we will all need to work a little bit harder now that
he is gone.”
