(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) released the following statement recognizing Transgender Day of Remembrance.
“All Americans, regardless of their gender identity, should have the opportunity to live freely, openly, and safely in their community without fear of harassment or violence. Unfortunately, in a year that has been marked by strides forward for LGBT Americans, those in the transgender community are too often victims of senseless bigotry and violence.
“As we recognize Transgender Day of Remembrance, it is important to take the time to honor the memory of those we have lost from anti-transgender prejudice and reflect on what can be done to prevent further tragedies from occurring. I join all those remembering their family, friends, and community members affected by this violence, and I am proud to be an ally, fighting for transgender rights in Congress.”
