(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) released the following statement after the U.S. Chemical Safety Board (CSB) released its final report on the Anacortes-Tesoro refinery explosion, which killed 7 people over 4 years ago.
“After waiting for more than four years, I am pleased that the Chemical Safety Board has finally released and approved its final report on the Anacortes-Tesoro refinery explosion, which killed seven people on April 2, 2010. This report makes it clear that the tragic loss of our neighbors, relatives, and friends was entirely preventable, so I will continue working to hold all parties accountable and ensure that this tragedy is not repeated.
“Specifically, I am extremely disturbed by details in the final report that show the Tesoro company knowingly allowed unsafe working conditions to exist at the Anacortes facility. I’m equally disappointed that the American Petroleum Institute promoted, and continues to promote, use of standards based on faulty science that provide cover for companies that continue to ignore inherently safer procedures.
“On Monday of this week, the nation paused to mark Workers Memorial Day and honor those who lost their lives, as well as those who have been injured or suffer from a serious illness while on the job. I hope that this and other similar reports will compel employers and regulatory agencies to ensure that by next year’s Workers Memorial Day, we will have seen a dramatic decrease in the number of workers killed or injured in the workplace.”
