(Washington, D.C.) – Today, Friday, May 23rd, 2014, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Chairman of the Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development (THUD) Appropriations Subcommittee, released the following statement after President Obama nominated San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro to serve as the next Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
“I applaud President Obama for his choice of Mayor Julián Castro to lead the Department of Housing and Urban Development. As Mayor of San Antonio, Castro has implemented innovative housing policies, overseen the creation of community partnerships, and worked to preserve and create affordable housing.
“Mayor Castro knows that making progress on housing issues requires collaboration, and he has worked in San Antonio to build strong, diverse community partnerships that address the housing needs of the city. This experience will be critical at HUD, an agency that depends on working with everyone from the largest cabinet agencies to the smallest community boards to extend housing opportunities in communities across the nation.
“I am confident that Mayor Castro will build on the great work Secretary Donovan has done to support community development, increase access to affordable housing, and help house families in need across the country.”
