Murray Statement on Immigration Enforcement Announcement

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray released the following statement after Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano announced that effective immediately, certain young people who were brought to the United States as young children, do not present a risk to national security or public safety, and meet several key criteria will be considered for relief from removal from the country or from entering into removal proceedings.

“I strongly support this move as an important first step toward giving young people who have been living in America most of their lives, and who have been contributing to their communities, a chance to stay in the country they love and a shot at the American dream.

“I am glad that the Administration took this step, but we have a lot more to do. I am going to keep fighting for the DREAM Act that Republicans continue to block so we can make sure even more young people who are in college or serving their country can have the opportunity they deserve here in America.

“And we absolutely need to keep working toward comprehensive immigration reform that helps our economy, affords the opportunities we have offered to generations of immigrants, maintains our American values, and improves our security.”
