(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – Today, the Republican leaders of the U.S. House of Representatives’ Education and Workforce Committee moved ahead with an Administration-sponsored plan to dismantle Head Start. Under this proposal, the 38-year old program would be turned into a state block grant, and comprehensive standards would be eliminated, quality of services would decline, and there would be no accountability program.
Rather than dismantling a proven and effective program, Senate Democrats will propose legislation that strengthens Head Start by ensuring high-quality programs with good teachers, comprehensive services, and strong family involvement – all in an effort to ensure that children enter school with the tools to succeed.
Senator Murray, a leading advocate for Head Start, released the following statement.
“Today, the leaders of the House of Representatives took the first steps toward tearing down 38 years of educational success for low-income children.
Since 1965, Head Start has helped over 20 million children build the confidence and skills they need to succeed in school. Unfortunately, House Republicans haven’t grasped what parents, teachers and students have known for nearly four decades – Head Start works.
Head Start is a great investment in our youth. I will continue to stand up for young children and work to strengthen, not sabotage Head Start.”
