(Washington, D.C.) – U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-Wash), the highest ranking Democrat on both the Transportation Appropriations Subcommittee and the Workforce Development Subcommittee, today expressed disappointment at an impasse in negotiations between the Federal Aviation Administration and the air traffic controller’s union.
According to federal law, Congress now has 60 days to intervene.
Murray released the following statement:
“Our air traffic controllers hold some of the most highly skilled safety-sensitive positions across the entire government. They deserve to have their contract and work rules negotiated at the bargaining table with safety as the highest priority.
“Submitting this contract to Congress is a reckless cop-out on the part of the Bush Administration. Congress should respond by mandating that this issue go to binding arbitration – as is called for under the bill that I introduced with Senator Obama.”
