Murray Meets with OMB Nominee Jack Lew, Discusses Commitment to Hanford Cleanup, Reducing Deficit

Meeting with OMB Nominee Jack Lew(Washington,
D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray met with Jack Lew, President Obama’s
nominee for Director of Office of Management and Budget to talk about
Washington state and national priorities.  Murray pressed Lew on the
importance of maintaining the federal government’s legal and moral obligation to Hanford cleanup, and they discussed
the importance of working to reduce the deficit and debt. Hearings on Lew’s
nomination are expected to take place in September.

“I
was glad to meet with Jack and have a conversation with him about the
importance of reducing our deficit and debt,”
said Senator Patty Murray.
“I have a nine year old grandson, and I don’t want him to inherit crumbling
infrastructure or an economy in which he can’t achieve the same dreams as his
parents or grandparents – but I also know we can’t pay for our future on the
backs of his generation. Jack  and I talked about the fact that when he
occupied this position in the nineties he worked to achieve a budget surplus
and put us on track to eliminate the debt—and he assured me that this is an
issue he takes extremely seriously.”

“I
also talked to Jack about the federal government’s legal and moral obligation
to clean up Hanford. I made sure he understands the issue, and I let him know
that should he be confirmed, I am going to be looking over his shoulder to make
sure Hanford and the Tri-Cities community get the resources they need every
year.”
