(Washington, D.C) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) worked to pass $176.5 million in spending for Washington state transportation, housing, and community development projects through the U.S. Senate. Murray is Chairman of the Senate Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development (THUD) Appropriations Subcommittee. The funding was included in the THUD Appropriations bill for Fiscal Year 2008. The bill passed the Senate by a vote of 88-7.
"To keep our state thriving we need to invest in our communities, our safety, affordable housing, and innovative transportation solutions," said Senator Murray. "At a time when budgets are tight and needs are numerous, I have worked to invest in projects that will make a real difference in our state."

Funding for Washington State Bridges
In addition to the funding Senator Murray added for Washington state projects, Murray also included an amendment to the THUD bill that will provide $1 billion nationwide to rebuild and rehabilitate deficient bridges. The amendment comes six weeks after a Minnesota bridge that was considered structurally deficient collapsed, killing 13 people and injuring more than 100. Washington state has been shown to have more than 2,300 deficient bridges. Senator Murray’s amendment will provide nearly $35 million to help repair these bridges.
