Murray Increases Hanford and Howard Hanson Budget as Member of Senate Budget Committee

(Washington,
D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), announced that as a senior
member of the Senate Budget Committee, she was able to secure money in the
budget for key Washington state priorities in the 2011 budget resolution that
passed that Committee today.  In particular, the Senate Budget Committee
resolution increases Emergency Management funding at Hanford and increases Army
Corps of Engineers funding to help repair the Howard Hanson Dam.

“As
a member of the Senate Budget Committee, it’s my job to ensure that the needs
of Washington state families and communities have a voice at the table.

“Today,
I am happy to announce that I was able to work to increase the budget to clean
up the nuclear waste at Hanford and meet our legal and moral commitments to the
people of the Tri-Cities.  And as we continue to work to ensure families
and businesses in the Green River Valley are protected from potential flooding,
I will continue fighting to ensure that we have the resources needed to repair
the Howard Hanson Dam.

“This
budget is a statement of our priorities.  I have fought to make sure we
are doing right by our children and grandchildren by passing a budget that
helps pay down our debt, but I also believe we have to invest in the priorities
that will continue to make Washington state strong far into the future.
Ensuring that we are cleaning up our nuclear waste and protecting our families
and economy are priorities that I will continue to stand up for in the U.S.
Senate.”

Senator Murray
worked closely with the administration to substantially increase the Emergency
Management budget, and she is going to continue fighting to make sure Hanford
has the dedicated funding it needs to fulfill our legal and moral obligation to
clean up waste.
