Murray Helps to Include Agriculture Disaster Package in Emergency Spending Bill

UPDATE: This supplemental funding passed the full Senate on 3/29/07 —

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) helped to pass more than $4 billion in disaster assistance as part of the Fiscal Year 2007 Supplemental Appropriations bill which passed the Senate Appropriations Committee today.

The agriculture disaster package will help farmers and ranchers by providing emergency aid for those who have lost crops due to weather-related disasters and flooding in the past two years.

“Washington’s farm families have been hit hard by natural disasters, flooding, low prices, and rising costs for fuel and fertilizer,” said Senator Murray. “They need help if we’re going to continue to have a strong agriculture economy that supports families in our state.”

Murray has supported efforts in previous appropriations bills to include agriculture disaster packages for producers who have been hit by weather-related disasters.

“Today’s victory is a good step forward for our nation’s farmers, but there is still a lot to be done,” Murray said. “I will continue to fight to secure our agriculture industry. The future prosperity of our state and nation depends on us doing right by farmers, ranchers and the entire agricultural industry.”

The bill now goes to the Senate floor for a vote by the full Senate.
