(Washington, D.C.) – Today, Wednesday, November 14th, U.S. Senator Patty Murray made the following statement, reiterating the need for the House to move forward with reauthorization of the Senate’s bipartisan, inclusive Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), which passed the Senate almost six months ago with 68 votes. Today marks the National Task Force to End Sexual and Domestic Violence Against Women’s “Day of Action,” urging Congress to finish the work of passing a VAWA that safely and effectively protects all victims before this Congress ends.
“Domestic violence protections for all women shouldn’t be a Democratic or a Republican issue,” Senator Murray said. “A six month delay is inexcusable. One day is inexcusable. As we enter the final days of this Congress, it is time for House Republicans to look beyond ideology and partisan politics. Their obstruction is taking a toll on women across this country.”
In July, Sen. Murray launched a petition calling on Speaker Boehner to pass the inclusive, bipartisan Senate VAWA. The petition included thousands of stories from domestic violence survivors and their families.
