Washington,
DC—Today, U.S. Senators Patty Murray (D-WA) and Maria Cantwell (D-WA) praised
the announcement by Alcoa that they will restart idled potlines at three
aluminum smelters across the United States, including Alcoa Wenatchee and Alcoa
Intalco. Alcoa estimates that 80 new workers will be hired in Wenatchee, and
60 new workers will be hired in Intalco.
Murray
and Cantwell worked with the Bonneville Power Administration and Alcoa to
secure a negotiated power agreement at Intalco that saved 600 jobs in
Washington state and set the stage for today’s announced expansion.
“This
is fantastic news for Washington state and the Alcoa community in Ferndale and
Wenatchee,” said Senator Patty Murray. “Today’s announcement shows what
can happen when government and industry come together to create jobs and help
families across our state.”
“I
am extremely pleased to learn that Alcoa Intalco will be restarting idled
capacity in both Ferndale and Wenatchee,” said Senator Maria Cantwell.
“The creation of 140 total new jobs moves these two regions further in the
direction of economic stability and improves Alcoa Intalco’s long-term
viability. This shows how our traditional, workhorse industries remain an
important source of economic vitality in the Northwest and it justifies efforts
to keep Alcoa in Washington state.”
