(Washington, D.C.) –
Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray released the following statement after BP
indicated that they would be unable to send a workforce safety representative
to a June 10 hearing she will be chairing on the failure of oil and gas
companies to provide adequate protections for workers. At the hearing, Murray
will question witnesses on the lessons learned from past accidents, as well as
what changes need to be made to better protect workers in the oil and gas
industry. Murray has invited BP executives to testify about a pattern of
safety violations that led to the Deepwater Horizon accident that killed 11
workers, and they have so far declined to attend the hearing.
“I
find it outrageous that even after an accident that killed 11 workers, BP is
still not putting a high enough priority on worker safety to send a
representative to a hearing specifically focused on protecting workers in their
industry,”
said Senator Patty Murray. “We need answers from BP about the history
of violations that led to the accident at Deepwater Horizon in order to make
sure tragedies like this never happen again. And I truly hope that they
reconsider this decision and attend this hearing.”
