(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Ranking Member of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions committee, released the following statement on President Obama’s plan to increase investments in child care affordability, quality, and availability.
“Today’s working families deserve the peace of mind that comes with knowing their children are safe and thriving while they are at work, so I applaud the President’s support for increasing access to affordable, high-quality child care and making preschool available to every family. In the coming weeks and months, our work in Congress to fix the broken No Child Left Behind Law offers a critical opportunity to expand affordable preschool programs and help more students start school on a strong footing. I’ll be pushing hard in Congress to ensure that we take advantage of it.”
Senator Murray has been a leader in the Senate on expanding access to preschool and working to make high quality care more affordable. She introduced the Helping Working Families Afford Child Care Act in July, which would substantially increase the tax credit that working families can receive for child care costs and expand the credit to countless low-income families who are currently ineligible. Like Senator Murray’s legislation, President Obama’s proposal also includes a similar significant expansion of the same tax credit.
