Murray Announces Over $9.5 Million for Spokane International Airport

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-Wash.) today announced the release of $9.525 million for the Spokane International Airport.

The funds, supported by the Airport Improvement Project (AIP) grant program, will be used to renovate the terminal building and to support the installation of a conveyor belt to help make luggage screening more efficient.

Murray, the senior Democrat on the Senate Transportation Appropriations Subcommittee helped secure the federal funding in the 2003 Appropriations bill.

“I am pleased to announce these federal funds for Spokane International Airport.  This renovation project will help enhance security for Spokane travelers while improving service and efficiency,” Senator Murray said. “The events of September 11th have required significant increases in security at Washington state’s airports and I believe that these federal funds will help move security to the next level at Spokane’s airport.”

This renovation project is just one example of the security enhancements that are being made by Spokane International Airport since September 11th.  The building renovations are expected to begin in January of 2004.  The project will take approximately 6-7 months to complete.
