(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-Wash) today announced two U.S. Department of Transportation grants for Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. One grant will provide $2 million for improved runway approach lighting; the other will provide $3.352 million for noise mitigation measures.
The funding was included in the fiscal year 2005 Transportation Appropriations bill, and Murray helped secure it as the highest-ranking Democrat on the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Treasury, the Judiciary, and Housing and Urban Development.
“These grants will help greatly in our efforts to expand Sea-Tac Airport while maintaining high safety standards and continuing to minimize unwanted noise for area residents,” Murray said. “I’m pleased to be able to help Sea-Tac meet our region’s growing transportation needs, and make it into an airport for the 21st Century.”
The total federal commitment to the third runway project is $278.3, and Senator Murray has been strongly committed to funding the project. Since its inception, she has helped secure $107 million in federal funding for the third runway. The runway lighting funding will be used to install an ALSF (Approach Lighting Sequence Flashing) system, which will guide aircraft coming into the new third runway from the north, over SR 518.
The noise mitigation funding will be used to lessen noise impacts on the Tyee Mobile Home Park, which is located 1.5 miles south of the airport.
