(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-Wash) today announced a $5.34 million U.S. Department of Transportation grant for Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. The grant will fund noise mitigation and safety measures for businesses near the airport.
“These grants will help greatly in our efforts to expand Sea-Tac Airport while continuing to minimize unwanted noise for area residents,” Murray said. “I’m pleased to be able to help Sea-Tac meet our region’s growing transportation needs, and make it into an airport for the 21st Century.”
Senator Murray has been strongly committed to funding improvements at Sea-Tac airport. As the highest-ranking Democrat on the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Treasury, the Judiciary, and Housing and Urban Development, Murray was instrumental in securing a federal letter of intent for multi-year discretionary grants to improve the airport. This includes building a third runway and conducting accompanying noise mitigation and safety improvements.
The total federal commitment in that letter of intent is $278.3 million, and this grant is part of that funding. So far, Murray has helped secure $107 million of that commitment, with more funding to come in future years.
This funding will be used to lessen noise impacts and meet FAA safety standards for businesses located immediately off of the new third runway in the city of Sea-Tac.
