(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) announced a total of over $8.3 million in federal support for critical airport improvement projects across Washington state, including a $4,760,000 grant for Spokane International Airport.
Spokane International will use this grant – provided through the Airport Improvement Program (AIP) – for construction of a general aviation apron to meet current aviation demand, as well as increase capacity. The funds will also support the acquisition of an Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting vehicle, which is required to replace an aging vehicle that has reliability issues. In addition, funds will be used to rehabilitate the terminal apron and Taxiway A, which is necessary to extend the life of the current pavement.
"I’m pleased that we are investing in Spokane International Airport so it can continue to play a strong role in supporting the economy and transportation needs of eastern Washington," said Senator Murray. "Spokane International is a vital portion of Washington state’s transportation infrastructure, and these funds will improve efficiency and safety at the airport."
AIP grants, which are administered by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), provide funding for infrastructure improvements that enhance efficiency and safety at airports. Murray, the Chair of the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development (THUD) Appropriations Subcommittee that oversees funding for the FAA, helped secure this funding in the FY07 THUD Appropriations bill.
Senator Murray has been a strong advocate for infrastructure improvements at Spokane International. She secured $13 million for the state-of-the-art air traffic control tower, and spoke at the groundbreaking in February 2005.
