(Washington, D.C.) Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) released the following statement after the Department of Transportation Secretary issued operating authority to a Mexican motor carrier, which was the final U.S. step in the agreement with the Mexican government. According to the agreement reached in March of this year, the Mexican government now has 5 business days to remove all of their tariffs on U.S. agricultural products.
“This is fantastic and long-awaited news for the Washington state farmers and growers who have been hurt by these deeply damaging tariffs for far too long.
“I am glad to see a happy end to a situation that should have never started. Washington state agricultural producers had nothing to do with the dispute between the two countries, and they should have never been targeted for these punitive tariffs that hurt businesses and cost local jobs.
“Now that our state’s farmers and growers will once again be able to compete on a level playing field, I want to commend the two sides for finally coming together to solve this problem. And I want to thank Washington state’s strong agricultural community for weathering this storm and for working to educate the public and bring people together to resolve this tough issue.”
