(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Chairman of the Senate Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development (THUD) Appropriations Subcommittee, applauded the announcement from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) that Sound Transit will receive $103,962,037 million through the Federal Transit Authority’s (FTA) New Starts competitive grant program. This grant will fund construction of guideway and track elements, stations and systems work for the University Link light rail project, and extend the existing light rail to the north connecting the University of Washington and Capitol Hill to downtown Seattle and the airport. The project includes 3.15 miles of new tunnel track and two underground stations and will serve downtown Seattle, Capitol Hill and the University District.
“Investing in our transportation infrastructure, particularly our successful and growing light rail system, will position the Puget Sound for economic growth for decades,” Senator Murray said. “Throughout my career in the Senate, improving our state’s transportation system has been one of my top priorities, and I’m thrilled that today, another $103 million in federal resources will help continue the great work we’ve already done to grow the economy and build a strong transportation network in the Puget Sound.”
As chairman of the THUD Appropriations Subcommittee, which oversees America’s federal transportation funding, Senator Murray has long advocated for Sound Transit in Washington, D.C. Throughout her career, Senator Murray has secured more than $1 billion to build and grow Sound Transit’s light rail system.
