(Washington, D.C.) – Today U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-Wash) applauded the announcement that the U.S. Department of Transportation will provide Washington state with millions of dollars to repair roads and highways that were damaged during flooding in November 2006.
The federal government will provide $11.044 million to the state for highway repairs and $6.3 million for repairs on federal lands, including damaged roads in Mount Rainer National Park.
“Washed-out roads have hurt commerce, disrupted families and endangered safety, but now the funding I fought for will help residents and communities get back on their feet. I want to thank Transportation Secretary Mary Peters for coming to Snohomish County in November to hear about the damage and for coming through for our state today.”
On November 27th, 2006, Senator Murray, Transportation Secretary Peters and Governor Gregoire met with WSDOT workers and emergency responders at the Snohomish County Emergency Management offices, where they got a briefing on the damage and recovery efforts. At the time, Peters announced initial funding of $1 million for road repairs. Today’s announcement provides an additional $17.34 million in federal funding.
Under the Federal Highway Administration’s Emergency Relief Program, Washington state and the National Park Service are due additional recovery and reconstruction funds from the federal government. Senator Murray will work to secure those additional funds in the U.S. Senate.
