(Port Angeles, WA) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, toured the Elwha River with Olympic National Park Service staff and Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe leaders to see how the region has changed since the removal of the Elwha River dams. Senator Murray and the event participants discussed ongoing salmon recovery work and the return of major salmon runs to the river. Senator Murray played a major role in the removal of the Elwha and Glines Canyon dams in 2011 and 2014, respectively, as well as the ongoing salmon restoration efforts.
“It was great to hike along the Elwha River and see this really beautiful part of Washington state,” dijo la senadora Patty Murray. “Seeing the river thriving and salmon repopulating in these waters was really special. This was just one powerful example of how our restoration efforts do work—we absolutely can do right by salmon, Tribes, local economies, and the environment when we put in the work.”
Senator Murray was instrumental in the decades-long process to remove the Elwha River dams—in the lead up to those efforts, Senator Murray secured millions for the dam removal, salmon restoration efforts, el Tribu Baja Elwha Klallam, and more. Salmon recovery and habitat recovery efforts continue to be a top priority for Senator Murray. Earlier today, Senator Murray spoke with local leaders in Sequim about their efforts to trap European green crabs and made a commitment to deliver federal dollars to combat the invasive species in Washington state. Just yesterday, Senator Murray discussed the historic influx of federal dollars she helped shepherd through last year’s government funding bill, the Ley de infraestructura bipartidista, y el Ley de Reducción de la Inflación to deliver a landmark investment in Puget Sound and salmon recovery efforts.
