Senator Murray Statement On Her Vote Against Reauthorization of Section 702 of the FISA Act

(Washington DC) – U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) released the following statement after voting no on the reauthorization of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA).

“While I believe we must provide our intelligence agencies with the tools they need to protect Americans and maintain our national security, I have always had serious and long-standing concerns about Section 702 and how it affects Americans’ civil liberties and privacy rights. I had hoped this time Leader McConnell would allow members of the Senate to have an honest and open debate, and I’m extremely disappointed he squandered this opportunity by refusing to allow amendments or floor debate. I will continue to push this Republican Congress to better balance national security with the individual freedoms of every citizen. ”

In addition to voting no today, Sen. Murray voted against the passage of the bill in 2008, and against reauthorization in 2012.
