Senator Murray Announces More Than $4.5 Million to Assess Hazardous Sites, Stimulate Redevelopment

Senator Murray: “When we clean up and invest in these brownfield properties, we’re creating jobs, redeveloping land for families and small businesses, and protecting the environment.”

Washington DC – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced over $4.5 million for the assessment and cleanup of brownfield sites across Washington state. The grants are administered by the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Brownfields and Land Revitalization Program and funded by the Ley de infraestructura bipartidista, which Senator Murray played a leading role in passing.

A brownfield is a property polluted by a hazardous substance or contaminant that prevents the redevelopment or reuse of the land for homes and businesses. The Assessment Grants awarded to seven communities across Washington state provide funding to help develop inventories of brownfield sites, site-specific cleanup and reuse plans, and conduct community involvement activities, planning, and site assessments.
